FIDE President to visit Trinidad and Tobago - Inaugural Umada Cup international tournament starting on 14th August

The Trinidad and Tobago Chess Association (TTCA) on behalf of the FIDE president will be hosting the tournament at the Cascadia Hotel Conference Room from the August 14 to August 18. The term ‘Umada’ is the Garifuna word for friendship, while Garifuna is an Arawak language that originated from the island of St. Vincent but is actually spoken in Belize, Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala.

Final Chess Masters 2010 - Bilbao - Shanghai 2010, participants and information

The competition will consist of two parts. The first one will be a qualification tournament in Shanghai with the participation of Hao Wang, Alexey Shirov, Levon Aronian, and Vladimir Kramnik. Two players from Shanghai will qualify for the final in Bilbao, where they will meet Magnus Carlsen and Viswanathan Anand.

Ulaanbaatar Women FIDE Grand Prix - Round One - Koneru, Zhao Xue and Chiburdanidze starting with victories

The 5th Women FIDE Grand Prix chess tournament is taking place 30th July to 11th August in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The opening ceremony was held on the Sukhbaatar Square, in the main government district, which was a privilege that no other sport event enjoyed before. One day earlier, a foundation for the FIDE Chess Academy was laid on the outskirts of Mongolia capitol.

Wojtaszek and Fressinet Leading in Pamplona - 4th International Chess Tournament A.D. San Juan, 24th July to 1st August

The round robin with 10 players is the main event, and so far seven rounds have been played. Grandmasters Radoslaw Wojtaszek and Laurent Fressinet are currently leading with five points each, full point ahead of the group of chasers. It is interesting that during the 2008 World Chess Championship in Bonn, Wojtaszek and Fressinet assisted the preparation of Anand and Kramnik respectively.
