10th Poikovsky Karpov tournament - Alexei Shirov is top seeded at Poikovsky 2009

The 10th International Poikovsky chess tournament in honor of former world champion Anatoly Karpov will take place on 3-12th June, 2009. The recent winner of Mtel Masters and Final Masters in Bilbao participant GM Alexei Shirov is top seeded in the event. He will play in the strong competition of three other 2700 club members - GM Gashimov, GM Rublevsky, and GM Naiditsch, while all the players in the event are over 2650.

GM Ghaem Maghami Ehsan Victorious at Subic Open - 2nd Subic International Open was with 74 participants, including 17 GM’s and 14 IM’s

GM Ghaem Maghami Ehsan from Iran skillfully maintained the lead taken in round 7 to win the tournament with final 7.0 points, half a point ahead of bulk of players. Good results from young and/or untitled Chinese competitors are hardly surprising anymore, but we have to note that Xiu Deshun (2422) and IM Yang Kaiqi (2413) finished on the shared second place.

China Chess Championship - Round 5 - Tan Zhongyi and Wang Hao leading Women and Men groups respectively

The 2009 China Chess Championship is taking place on 26th May - 6th June in the city of Xinghua Jiangsu. With two consecutive wins, GM Wang Hao (photo) extends his lead in the Men Championship to a full point ahead of untitled Ding Liren. Ji Dan, rated only 2342, is also doing great by holding 3 points, while some of the famous Grandmasters are struggling - GM Zhang Pengxiang has only one point.
